September’s Top Choices

Our pick of what to watch this month…

Wolfs
On Apple+ from 27 September

Oceans Eleven double act George Clooney and Brad Pitt reunite as two underworld fixers (think clean-up guy Harvey Keitel’s Winston Wolf from Pulp Fiction) booked to do the same job of getting rid of a dead body from a hotel room. In Jon Watts bromantic black comedy the pair run into trouble when the dead body is far from dead and has a backpack of stolen drugs.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
In cinemas 6 September

Tim Burton returns to his 1988 cult classic featuring Michael Keaton reprising his iconic role as the mischievous bio-exorcist. In this sequel, three generations of the Deetz family return to Winter River after an unexpected tragedy. Lydia’s life is upended when her rebellious teenage daughter discovers a mysterious portal to the afterlife. As Beetlejuice is summoned once again by saying his name three times, he gleefully returns to wreak his signature brand of havoc. Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara return to their original roles, with Jenna Ortega joining the cast, promising a fresh and chaotic twist on the beloved supernatural comedy.

Firebrand
In cinemas 6 September

Set in Tudor England, the historical drama Firebrand offers a retelling of the life of Catherine Parr (Alicia Vikander), who reluctantly becomes the sixth wife of the tyrannical King Henry VIII (Jude Law). With her predecessors either dead, beheaded, or vanquished, Catherine’s decision to marry Henry comes with great personal risk. As the king’s courtiers cast doubts on her fidelity, they stoke Henry’s growing paranoia. The film delves into the tense relationship between Catherine and the increasingly unstable, obese ruler, whose worsening ailments, including a gruesome leg wound, reflect his deteriorating state.

Speak No Evil
In cinemas 12 September

Speak No Evil turns a dream holiday into a living nightmare when an American couple and their daughter visit a British family’s seemingly idyllic country estate for the weekend. What starts as a pleasant escape soon spirals into terror as the couple uncovers unsettling truths about their hosts. Starring James McAvoy, known for his recent success in psychological thrillers, this horror remake delves into the dark side of trust and the terror that can lurk behind a facade of charm.

Lee
In cinemas 13 September

Hello Awards Season! Here comes one of your first contenders. Kate Winslet plays renowned WWII photographer Lee Miller, who’s career takes her from fashion model to frontline reporter. Determined to document the truth about the conflict, she must overcome the odds stacked against female correspondents. Strong support comes from Andy Samberg, Josh O’Connor, Andrea Riseborough and Marion Cotillard.

The Critic
In cinemas 13 September

Magneto sorry… Ian McKellen has fun with another deliciously wicked character in this Patrick Marber scripted period drama. He plays Jimmy Erskine a 1930’s famous gay theatre critic saving his most odious reviews for leading lady Nina Land (Gemma Arterton). But when he becomes a target of his newspaper’s new owners he strikes a Faustian pact with Nina who is desperate to win his approval.

The Outrun
In cinemas 27 September

Saoirse Ronan leads this drama from director Nora Fingscheidt, who helmed the acclaimed 2019 German drama System Crasher, which follows a young woman as she returns to Scotland’s remote Orkney Islands, having just finished a period of rehabilitation for alcohol addiction. Ronan is also a producer on the film, along with new husband and Slow Horses star Jack Lowden, and with her performance already drawing acclaim, she might be picking up gongs for her work in front of and behind the camera too.

Megalopolis
In cinemas 27 September

Francis Ford Coppolla has literally bet the farm, well, vineyard, on his return to big budget filmmaking. Independently financed for an eye-watering $120million, the film got a mixed reception at Cannes and came under heavy scrutiny for using made-up quotes about Coppola’s previous films in a recent trailer. Is there any way that Megalopolis can ever live up to the hype? For some, this modern Roman parable has crumbled already, for others, it looks mega.

Slow Horses Season 4
On Apple+ from 4 September

The team of MI5 outcasts from Slough House led by the dishevelled, sharp-tongued Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman) return for the fourth season of adaptations of Mick Herron’s novels. This season teases the deaths of some of the regular Slow Horses crew (our money’s on Roddy Ho) and has River Cartwright (Jack Lowden) on the hunt for the bad guys (led by The Matrix’s Hugo Weaving) behind the bombing of a shopping centre.

Agatha All Along
On Disney+ from 18 September

Set after the events of WandaVision, this series sees Salem witch Agatha Harkness team up with a suspicious goth teen to take on the legendary Witches’ Road – a magical gauntlet of trials that if completed awards the victors a powers upgrade.

The Penguin
On Sky Atlantic from 19 September

Starring Colin Farrell as Oz Cobb (aka The Penguin) this is an eight episode limited series about the character first seen in Matt Reeves’ 2022 The Batman. We follow The Penguin as he expands his empire from The Iceberg Lounge to take control of all of the crime in Gotham City. But don’t expect Robert Pattison’s Bat bloke to turn up. Because he doesn’t…
